As a psychologically-skilled GP, Dr Yolande Breyder is in the unique position of providing a potential point of first contact to those with emotional or mental health issues and is able to provide holistic care, administering both psychological intervention and prescribing psychotropic medication as indicated. Each patient is assessed on an individual basis and a treatment plan is tailored to each patient’s specific needs. This may involve medication, various focused psychological strategies, or a combination of the two. Various evidence-based psychological strategies are offered:
Cognitive-behaviour therapy is often the treatment of choice for depression and anxiety disorders and involves a process of cognitive restructuring and various behavioural techniques including assertiveness skills training, communication skills training, problem-solving, activity scheduling, and stress management.
Acceptance Commitment Therapy
Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) is one of the recent mindfulness-based behaviour therapies, which unlike most Western psychotherapies, does not have symptom reduction as a goal. This is based on the view that ongoing attempts to get rid of “symptoms” can create clinic disorders in the first place. ACT encourages taking mindful action guided by one’s values in order to create a rich and meaningful life.
Emotionally-Focused Couple Therapy
EFT is a short term psychotherapy approach to working with distressed couples. Negative cycles of interaction are isolated and negative emotions are targeted and managed. Couples are guided to the expression of emotions that pull for compassion and connection. The goal of therapy is the development of new attachment bonds.
“At Hawthorne Psychology I can provide clients in Brisbane with professional psychotherapy treatment in a secure and comfortable environment. I understand that taking that first step to opening up about your situation can be difficult, and sometimes you are not sure what the process will involve or the results will be. I will recommend the most appropriate treatment given your circumstances, and can advise on the length of the treatment and what the commitment to therapy will involve. There is no judgement; only openness, acceptance and useful advice. As your therapist, I am able to guarantee complete confidentiality and professional discretion.”
